CRT Rebranded? What You Need to Know – The Great Awakening Project

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
Galatians 5:1”

What is Critical Race Theory?

Critical Race Theory (CRT) became evident in educational settings in the 1980s, but its mainstream acceptance as truth is a recent development. CRT, also known as anti-racism, applies Marxist ideology to race, dividing individuals by skin color. It labels white individuals as oppressors and people of color as oppressed, fueling racial conflict. This Marxist theory claims that the oppressed must rise up and overthrow their oppressors, creating division instead of unity.

Education and CRT: What is at Stake?

Marxist ideology infiltrated our culture through CRT, its first major foothold, and for over a decade, our children have been indoctrinated with CRT in the public schools. Now an entire generation believes they were born with predetermined identies—whether as a racist, a victim, or part of the LGBTQ community. They believe America itself is against them, that our Constitution, laws, and entire judicial system are structured to oppress them simply because they belong to a minority group.

This way of thinking is designed and pushed to divide our country. It stands in direct opposition to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream that people be judged “by the content of their character, not the color of their skin.” It contradicts our national motto, E Pluribus Unum — “Out of many, one.” It rejects the Declaration of Independence, which affirms that “all men are created equal and endowed with the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”

As mentioned on our recent call, this ideology is “America’s kryptonite” and, if left unchecked, has the potential to unravel the very foundation of our nation’s greatness. Now, CRT is dangerously morphing into something called Liberation Studies

What are Liberation Studies?

For years parents and educators have pushed back against CRT’s divisive influence, but now, influential institutions have rebranded CRT as Ethnic or Liberation Studies.

This shifty namechange is just the beginning. Liberation Studies is a direct attempt to reshape the values of new generations and move them further from our Godly American heritage and strong foundations.

In fact, a well-known education leader in the US recently admitted that ten years ago he would have said reading and arithmetic were the most critical goals of education, but now the new focus should be educating children to advocate for social justice and defend our democracy.  What has happened?!?

Liberation Studies expand CRT’s framework, replacing independent thought with social justice narratives detached from Biblical truth, training students to become activists and ideological foot soldiers rather than independent thinkers. Rooted in decolonization, these programs train students to reject core American values and traditional family structures by portraying them as oppressive systems that must be dismantled.

How Does This Impact Our Schools?

In October 2021, California passed Assembly Bill 101 (AB 101), requiring all high school students to complete a one-semester ethnic studies course to graduate, starting with the class of 2030. Schools must introduce these courses in the 2025-2026 school year.

California’s education policies often set national trends. If state universities require ethnic studies credits for admission, other states may adopt similar high school graduation requirements. This could lead to a ripple effect, embedding CRT and liberation ideology into classrooms across the country. Executive orders signed by our new President may stay these developments to some extent but state and local leadership will play a key role in which trends will develop.

As this unfolds, we must keep the main thing the main thing and focus on raising up critical thinkers grounded in truth and equipped with skills to thrive not advocacy and divisive ideologies.

What About the Role of the Church?

The Church holds the only true answer to the division in our culture: the Gospel of Jesus Christ. At the foot of the Cross, we all stand as sinners in need of forgiveness. No race, background, or status sets us apart. In Christ, we are made one Body, one temple. Instead of shouting across racial divides and assigning blame for societal failures, the Church must boldly speak Truth to these issues and equip their congregations to do the same.

At its core, our nation’s crisis is not a skin problem, it’s a sin problem. As Christians, we know that true liberation comes not from man-made ideologies but from Christ. Only the transformative power of Christ can bring true reconciliation, unity, and love.

As Christians we must take our places on the school boards, in the classrooms, in our homes speaking the Truth in Love on these issues and standing for a return to the basics in education — reading, writing, arithmetic, love of country, and the principles that make America a strong nation from which the Gospel can spread worldwide.

What We Are Doing & How You Can Help

Through our monthly Education Collective Calls, we bring together national and state educators, pastors, and leaders to develop strategies for pushing back against this ideological takeover. This past December and again in February, we are hosting The Golden Age of Education Summit to finalize a strategic plan for implementing education goals set by the new administration, including the removal of CRT from schools at the state and local levels. Opposition is great! We must have a plan in place.

Support the Summit and be part of restoring true Education to America. Your support helps us equip leaders, mobilize communities, and create a path forward. Thank you for your prayer and support.
