“Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He chose for His inheritance.”
– Psalm 33:12
Our Founders Did Not Dismiss The Bible — It was Their Blueprint
A myth persists that our Founding Fathers were largely secular, but history tells a different story. They were not just secular philosophers, but pastors, patriots, and disciples of Christ who boldly built their lives, and our laws, on the Word of God. The Bible was not a side influence. It was their foundation.
State Constitutions Declared Jesus as Lord
Before America became a nation, we were a collection of faith-filled states and colonies. Our nation’s foundation is built on the original 13 state constitutions.
- All 13 constitutions required a declaration of faith
- 9 demanded a Protestant profession of faith
- Maryland allowed Catholics—but still insisted on a declaration of faith
- Most included the line: “I profess Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior”
Even the Mayflower Compact, the earliest covenant for self-government in America, declared its purpose: “for the glory of God and the advancement of the Christian faith.”
A Godly Heritage Written in History
Our Founders lived their convictions:
- 51 of the 55 Constitutional framers belonged to orthodox Christian churches
- 29 held seminary-equivalent degrees
- 52 of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence were devoted Christians
- The Declaration itself affirms our rights are “endowed by their Creator”—not the government.
- Political science scholars studying 15,000 documents from that era found that the Bible was the most-cited source, accounting for 34% of all citations (Dr. Donald Lutz, The Origins of American Constitutionalism).
These leaders saw Scripture as essential to civic life, not separate from it.
Our Constitution was Built for Believers
John Adams once said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people.” Was this a suggestion, or was it a warning?
The American system only works when its people are grounded in Biblical truth. Our laws, rights, and freedoms were designed to flourish in a culture shaped by Scripture. The Founders lived their convictions and did not believe in keeping faith private. They brought it into the public square—and we must do the same.
This is not just a history lesson. It is a reminder that if we forget God, we lose freedom (Deut. 8). But if we remember Him, we can become restorers of what is broken. As Isaiah 58:12 says, “Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.”
Reviving America
To restore America, we must re-engage as Christians in our communities, in our nation.
At the Great Awakening Project, we work to revive the Biblical worldview in key cultural spheres—like education, government, business, and the church—by identifying key leaders and facilitating strategic collaboration for maximum impact.
Partner with us to REVIVE a Biblical worldview in America one step, one cultural sphere at a time.
